Who is the professional exchange student?

I’m Michael Crews, a senior at Cox Mill High School in Concord, North Carolina. I’m a scholarship finalist for the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study Abroad program. I will be living in Turkey for one academic year as an Youth Ambassador promoting mutual understanding between my host community in Turkey and the United States. The YES Abroad program offers 65 full scholarships to high school students to study abroad in 9 countries; the program is fully funded by the Department of State.  I was chosen from hundreds of national applicants. I’m one of 8 students that will be going to Turkey this September 5th.

I recently returned from a 10 month stay in Cape Town, South Africa.  I was an exchange student to Mitchell’s Plain, a township in Cape Town, from February 2012 to January 2013. Mitchell’s Plain is South Africa’s 3rd largest township and is about 30 minutes outside of Cape Town. When I went to South Africa it was through AFS-USA which is the oldest and largest high school exchange program in the country. While in South Africa I attended the local school; Spine Road High School.
I’m currently a volunteer with the YMCA summer reader’s program where I help teach under performing third grade students how to increase their writing skills and abilities. I’ve been an volunteer Attorney with the Cabarrus County Teen Court for the past 4 years; Teen Court is a diversion program for first time misdemeanor teen offenders which capitalizes on the positive effects of peer pressure. I’m also a regular volunteer at the Charlotte Rescue Mission on Thanksgiving and Easter where I help to serve and/or set up the dinning room area for the guests. I’ve been on the Cox Mill High School Honor Roll for 3 years and I have 3.4 G.P.A. Lastly I’ve been selected as one of the 2013 Top 100 Young Black Men of Charlotte by the YBM Leadership Alliance.
